San Francisco Breaks

San Francisco's Precancel Type L3e exists mainly on Perf. 11 stamps, Washington-Franklin Heads and issues of 1922-. It appears that the printer cut into the device to assist in holding the sheets of stamps in place. The varieties are very consistent, I have only found type J to exist with the top damaged or undamaged; that may be the only true "break." I believe all the other varieties were really deliberate.

Please note that I no longer collect precancels, these were sold off long ago and are shown courtesy of the new owner.

These were "plated" using simply the stamps with straight edges, and filling the rest from blocks and strips. I could very well be wrong. I bought the original collection of these stamps from a David Smith auction several years ago, and added about half of them since. (The pages were printed with my old Commodore computer, so it must have been in the '80's.) Below are the positions of the varieties as I have worked them out:

Upper case letters indicate varieties that exist in only 1 position, lower case are in several positions. They are described as:

A - "N FRANCISCO" cut in half; line above slightly thinned.
B - Top of "SAN FRANCISCO" missing; top line goes from thin to missing.
C - Top line missing; missing top of "SAN FRANCISCO".
D - Top line just a trace at right; dimple in bottom line below "A".
E - Bottom line ends at "O"; otherwise complete.
F - Bottom line missing; otherwise complete.
G - Bottom line just a trace at right; "CALIFORNIA" cut at bottom.
H - Bottom line light; missing bottom of "CALIFORNIA".
I - Same as H, but slightly more missing from bottom line and from "CALIFORNIA".
J - Missing middle of "CALIFORNI"; "CISCO" and upper line may be damaged.
K - Top line starts at "N"; otherwise complete.
l - Line gap gives appearance of bars. May also affect types E, F, K.
M - Top line ends at "N". An exagerated version of position n.
n - Lines end early. Occurs with most positions on the right side.
o - Lines start late. Occurs on some positions on the left side.
